What the research measured
Across 194 trials in 14 states, the cited analysis reported up to 0.04 Mg/ha additional soybean yield from adding a neonicotinoid to a fungicide seed treatment. The sources discuss insecticide and fungicide components separately, with responses depending on pest, disease, and establishment conditions.
Two peer-reviewed multi-state meta-analyses (194 studies in 14 states; 143 studies in 12 states plus 3,614 grower fields), an EPA benefits assessment and Extension syntheses.5 independent sources. What it is. A factory-applied seed coating pairing a neonicotinoid insecticide with two or more seedling-disease fungicides, protecting the seedling for its first few weeks after planting. Neonicotinoid-treated seed covered a third to nearly half of US soybean acres in the study years.
Study conditions and limitations
- Sources describe the following risk factors for seedling disease: soils below 60°F at planting, compacted, no-till or flood-prone fields, continuous soybean, seeding rates under 140,000, or a history of seedling disease, SDS or red crown rot.
- The insecticide is more likely to matter after pasture, grassland or CRP, with heavy decomposing residue, in double-crop soybean, or where bean pod mottle virus is a risk; it is bioactive only 3–4 weeks after planting.
- Single seasons can show large responses that multi-year averages do not: Iowa State’s 2011 trials found effects at all four sites, for example 71.6 vs 63.3 bu/ac at Crawfordsville.
- SDS products (ILEVO, Saltro) are separate actives added to the base package and only return money where SDS shows up: an 89% chance of a positive return with severe SDS at $13/ac, very low without symptoms.
- Economics swing on price: Esker et al. 2026 found a net benefit only at $5.10–8.52 per unit with soybean prices near 20-year highs; a conservative scenario lost $5.89–10.18 per acre.

- Neonicotinoid seed treatments of soybean provide negligible benefits to US farmers ↗
Pooled 194 randomized, replicated field studies from 14 states (2006–17). Fungicide plus neonicotinoid beat fungicide-only by at most 0.04 Mg/ha; the largest neonicotinoid response (+0.19 Mg/ha) occurred in only 12% of cropping systems. The economic analysis concluded treated seed should not cost more than untreated seed.
- Marginal causal effect of fungicide seed treatments on soybean yield and uncertain profitability in the US Midwest ↗
Fungicide seed treatment alone: 143 rainfed Midwest trials (12 states, 2006–17) averaged 22.2 kg/ha, and 3,614 grower fields in 10 states about 36 kg/ha with confidence intervals overlapping zero. A net benefit appeared only at $5.10–8.52 per unit with soybean prices near 20-year highs.
- Benefits of Neonicotinoid Seed Treatments to Soybean Production ↗
EPA concluded neonicotinoid seed treatments provide negligible overall benefit to soybean production in most situations: the treatments are bioactive only 3–4 weeks after planting and, compared with the next-best alternative, likely provide $0 and at most $6 per acre in benefit.
- Why Documented Risk Factors Should Guide Soybean Fungicide Seed Treatment Decisions ↗
In farmer units: fungicide seed treatment averaged 0.33 bu/ac (95% CI 0.01–0.64) in rainfed multi-state trials, about 0.54 bu/ac in grower fields and 1.26 bu/ac in the published literature; a net benefit above $2/ac only at $5.10–7.26 per unit with $11–19 beans, and a conservative scenario returned −$5.89 to −$10.18 per acre.
- Seed Treatment and Foliar Fungicide Impact on Sudden Death Syndrome and Soybean Yield ↗
The SDS-targeted active fluopyram (a different active from the neonicotinoid) raised yield 4.4 bu/ac (7.6%) over a base treatment where SDS was severe in multi-state trials, with an 89% chance of a positive return at $13/ac and $10 beans, but a very low chance without symptoms.
Before you buy, ask
- What pest or disease pressure did the trials with a response actually have?
- What does the treatment cost per unit, and how many bushels would it need to add to pay?
- Can I buy the same variety untreated or with a different package?
